Jim Scullion has been in constant demand to exhibit his work. Over the years he has been involved in many exhibitions and his unique and imaginative attitude to exhibiting has contributed greatly to his success. In one exhibition he invited local artists, amateur and professional alike, to add their work and he entitled the exhibition “Jim Scullion and Friends. “ This very successful show gave exposure to many artists who would otherwise have had difficulty in exhibiting. In another exhibition he displayed his paintings unframed alongside his initial sketches etc. and entitled the Exhibition, “Jim Scullion, Unplugged”. This warts and all approach proved very popular. In recent years Jim has exhibited in New York, Las Vegas and Toronto.

During the 1990s Jim’s two major exhibitions “The Jim Scullion Sportart Exhibition”, and “Jim Scullion’s Football Mall of Fame” exhibition, toured extensively throughout Britain and abroad, and attracted over two million visitors. Both exhibitions broke numerous attendance records at many of the galleries and exhibition spaces they visited, helping Jim to receive many accolades including twice being nominated European Sport Artist of the Year.

The Sportart Exhibition and Workshops.

As part of Glasgow’s 1990 European City of Culture celebrations Jim Scullion devised the Sportart Exhibition which was sponsored by the Scottish Arts Council and Strathclyde Regional Council. The exhibition followed a year long series of free art workshops run by Jim Scullion, with various members of the community. Within the workshops Jim shared some of his trade secrets, and allowed the 3,000 plus participants to create their own masterpieces

At the end of the year over 200 paintings, illustrating over 90 sports, and created by Jim within the workshops went on display as the Sportart exhibition. The exhibition also displayed many of the paintings created by the workshop participants, alongside photographs and video from the workshops.

The Chairman of Celtic FC along with players from the club and an array of other sports personalities opened the Exhibition in Jim’s Home town, Coatbridge in early 1991. In 4 weeks over 30,000 people had visited the Exhibition in the new Gallery space at Summerlee Heritage Park Coatbridge. This led to the demand for the Exhibition to tour

The Exhibition Tours

Despite much interest from traditional galleries and Exhibition spaces in the City of Glasgow, Jim chose Parkhead Forge as the venue for Glasgow. Jim felt that the ordinary shoppers who flocked to the newly opened Shopping Centre were just the type of people who would enjoy his work. This proved to be the case. The exhibition was opened on the 29th April 1991 and was due to run until the end of July, but due to public demand it ran until the end of September. The exhibition then toured both in Britain and abroad

Jim Scullion Football Mall of Fame Exhibition

The Football Mall of Fame Exhibition Came as a direct result of the success of the Sportart Exhibition at The Forge Shopping Centre. The owners of the Forge were so pleased by the success of the Sportart exhibition that they sponsored Jim to create a new exhibition which was to concentrate solely on Football. Jim was given free reign to to design the exhibition. The exibition opened in February 1994, and was advertised as the First Half, which ran until the end of May 1994.

The Second Half and Extra Time

The Exhibition re-opened at the end of June 1994 with many additional new exhibits, and was advertised as the Second Half, which ran until November 1994. In February 1995 it again re-opened and was billed as Extra Time, again with many new exhibits. At one point over 150 of Jim’s paintings were on display. The Exhibition closed at the Forge in July 1995, and went on to tour extensively both at home and abroad. Jim chose to take the Exhibition to his hometown of Coatbridge, where he had launched his Sportart Exhibition for its final Scottish showing before it toured. In its 6 week run in Coatbridge alone it attracted 35,000 visitors.

The Success of the Exhibition

Jim believes that much of the success of the exhibition was due to the tremendous support he received from Football Clubs and Players throughout Europe. Many personally attended the exhibition at various venues and others sent messages and signed photos for inclusion in the memorabilia part of the Exhibition, which had come about as a result of Players, Clubs and visitors alike bringing along personal items to add to Jim’s own collection. This helped to make the exhibition truly unique.
