Grace

The painting was created at the weekly art class at Celtic Park. The original artwork was put on public display as part of the Artful Codgers Exhibition at Summerlee Coatbridge from 30th March until 10th June.

Rod Stewart recently recorded the song "Grace" which is sung by the Celtic support. The song tells the story of Grace Evelyn Gifford an Irish artist and a political cartoonist and activist. Grace married her fiancé Joseph Plunket in Kilmainham Gaol only a few hours before he was executed at dawn for his part in the 1916 Easter Rising, in 1923 Grace was imprisoned herself in Kilmainham Gaol for a period of 3 months. This was due to her political views. During her incarceration she used crayons to cover her cell walls with bright paintings, cartoons and the Kilmainham Madonna. Unfortunately, when the prison fell into disrepair the artwork was destroyed. If you visit Kilmainham Gaol today you can see a replica of the Kilmainham Madonna which was painted by Irish Artist Tom Ryan during the restoration of the Gaol. Grace never remarried and died alone in 1955.

By a Lonely Prison Wall

The painting was created at the weekly art class at Celtic Park. The original artwork was put on public display as part of the Artful Codgers Exhibition at Summerlee Coatbridge from 30th March until 10th June.

Based on the song The Fields of Athenry written in 1979 by Pete St John. Set during the Irish Famine, the song tells the tale of a man being sentenced to transportation to Australia for stealing corn for his family. The song has been adopted by many sports fans, particularly with an Irish connection. It is a favourite of the Celtic fans

At the End of The Storm

This was painted during a lengthy stay in hospital. After over 2 months in hospital, I completed it the evening before I finally got home. This summed up exactly how I felt at the time. A few weeks later the original artwork was put on public display as part of the Artful Codgers Exhibition at Summerlee Coatbridge from 30th March until 10th June 2025.

When You Had Ball You Were Never Lonely

This was painted at our class at Celtic Park. The original artwork was put on public display as part of the Artful Codgers Exhibition at Summerlee Coatbridge from 30th March until 10th June 2025.

When we were kids in the 50's and 60's there were fewer cars, and playing football in the street was part of our daily routine. The weather did not deter us from our passion. Even when your pals were not around all you needed was a football to keep you occupied. When discussing this in the Art Class at Celtic Park Danny McGrain said "When you had a ball you were never lonely". Hence the title of this artwork.

I guess many of us have done this. I know that I certainly have many times over the years. When you drive to a place from your past that holds particular memories for you and you sit outside it and recapture some of those memories. I usually get out of the car and walk along the street and those memories come flooding back.

The Irish Mourner

The painting was created at our weekly art class at Celtic Park. The original was put on display to the public as part of the Artful Codgers Exhibition at Summerlee Museum in Coatbridge between 30 March and the 10 June 2025.

My Grandfather died when I was 15 and I am now 71. At the wake a relative or friend from Ireland arrived. I did not know this man and never saw him again after the funeral. I remember him having fairly long unruly hair although bald on top. He had a ruddy complexion and a loud, raucous voice and laugh. He told jokes and stories all evening and constantly drank and laughed. At one point in the evening he walked across the room and stood over the coffin looking down at my grandfather and his demeanor changed for a few minutes. He eventually wiped away a tear and returned to previous guise as a comedian. I have tried to capture those few moments in this sketch.

The Boys

The painting was created at our weekly art class at Celtic Park. The original was put on display to the public as part of the Artful Codgers Exhibition at Summerlee Museum in Coatbridge between 30 March and the 10 June 2025.

In the beginning "The Boys" started out as a painting of one particular childhood memory that I had. However, while it was in progress I showed it to a few friends and family who thought that I was portraying completely different memories. My initial idea was to portray a memory of a school trip to Portobello. After spending an hour or so walking along the beach, then paddling in twos holding hands, we sat on the sand and were given a packed lunch. The girls were taken off to the main street to do the toilet and we were marched back to the bus and were told to pee at the side of the bus. That was to be the subject of my painting. When my old pals saw it they came up with other possible scenarios which included the following. A group of boys relieving themselves in primary school toilets. The time we were taken to Airdrie to see the Circus parade go through the town. A queue of us boys outside Coatbridge Baths boring holes in the sandstone wall with coins as we waited endlessly for entry. The most bizarre was a memory I had blanked out over the years and that was of a group of us friends, standing on a bridge over the Monkland Canal watching 2 men in a rowing boat taking the body of a woman out of the canal. I'll leave it up to you to decide

The Celtic Socks

The painting was created at our weekly art class at Celtic Park. The original was put on display to the public as part of the Artful Codgers Exhibition at Summerlee Museum in Coatbridge between 30 March and the 10 June 2025.

I remember one year when I was around five or six years of age when every boy in the street got Celtic socks for Christmas. We still got a selection box, or a chocolate smokers outfit, and a stocking with an orange and sugar mouse with a bit of string for a tail. But the Celtic Socks were the main present. It didn't matter what team you supported, Celtic, Rangers, Albion Rovers or even Airdrie we all got a pair of Celtic Socks. And weloved them as this was the closest most of us had ever got to wearing a football strip. I don't know where these socks originated, maybe somebody knitted them, or they fell off the back of a lorry, but they definitely made us happy. After the Christmas break we walked together to our different schools, all wearing short trousers to proudly show off our Celtic Socks.

The plight of the homeless has often featured in my artwork over the years, with the paintings donated to charities to auction off to raise much needed funds. This is a problem worldwide and seems to be increasing year by year. The Celtic Foundation, along with it's other countless projects at home and abroad, has worked with numerous homelessness projects and provided funding and direct assistance over the years.

The Boy With The Black Eye

The painting was created at our weekly art class at Celtic Park. The original was put on display to the public as part of the Artful Codgers Exhibition at Summerlee Museum in Coatbridge between 30 March and the 10 June 2025.

Growing up playing in the street, there was a boy the same age as me who always had injuries, a cut nose, massive bruises, bandaged hands etc. More often than not he had a black eye. He was a sad boy and we all knew that his dad beat him up. Sadly no adult did anything about it. This is a tribute to him and kids like him. Please note this portrait is not of him but of a boy that I have created inside my head

I saw this old guy selling t-shirts on the streets of Manhattan on a miserable cold St Patrick's eve. I couldn't resist buying one. He popped into my head during one of art sessions and I sketched the scene as a demonstration on how to use Pastel Pencils and Coloured Pencils together.

Mr Holmes

The painting was created at our weekly art class at Celtic Park. The original was put on display to the public as part of the Artful Codgers Exhibition at Summerlee Museum in Coatbridge between 30 March and the 10 June 2025.

As a boy I was introduced to a Sherlock Holmes on the radio and was instantly hooked. My love for books and movies has helped the passion for Holmes to continue and grow. I have portrayed Holmes over the years in many guises, I even portayed my father as Holmes and more recently Tony Roper as Moriarty. I enjoyed Ian McKellen as the more senior Sherlock in Mr Holmes. Hence this portrait. Many people ask me what kind of music do I listen to when painting. Although I occasionally listen to music I prefer to listen to audio books and radio plays. I have a collection of Sherlock Holmes radio plays from the USA and the BBC with a combined running time of over 200 hours and I enjoy listening to them when painting
